Overview of the Course
The current course seeks to map language (lexicon and grammar) with its immediate surroundings. The central focus of the course will be on how they are connected and impact one another. Students will work with examples of languages from throughout the world to understand how they differ in generating the verbal image of the world that we perceive. It will demonstrate that our vision of the world is not neutral and is coloured by the structure of our language. This view of language has ecological difficulties. In this course, we will understand how languages are fundamentally biased and what we may do to achieve a neutral perspective.
Goals of the Course
- To help kids grasp the relationship between their surroundings and its relationship to their language.
- To make kids aware of the concept of diversity.
- To educate pupils about the process of language dying.
- To make pupils aware of the usage of metaphors in environmental exploitation.
Learning Objectives
- The learner should be able to understand the inherent link between language and environment by the conclusion of the course.
- Recognise and value linguistic and cultural variety.
- Understand the process of language attrition and death and should be able to affect good changes in a language's life.
- Recognise good and bad metaphors in a consumerist discourse on language and the environment.
